Njal’s Saga Obituaries
-Thorvald Osivfson
Thorvald, the husband of Hallgerd Hoskildsdottir, died young on his farm. He was killed by Thjolstolf with a major blow to his head with an axe, he also lost his arm. Hiss body has not been recovered from the lake that Thjolstolf dumped it in. His family has been given 200 ounces of silver by Hoskild as compensation for their loss.
-Glum Oleifson
Glum, the second husband of Hallgerd Hoskildsdottir has died. He leaves behind his loving wife and daughter. He was attacked by Thjolstolf who broke his shoulder and collarbone. He latter died of internal bleeding. Glum’s brother was given many gifts by Hrut and Hoskild to make up for his loss.
-Svart
Svart, a favorite servant of Njal and Bergthora died in Raudaskrid. He had been sent there to chop wood when Kol, sent by Hallgerd, gave him a blow to the head with an axe. Gunnar, Hallgerd’s husband, agreed to pay Njal 12 ounces of silver as compensation.
-Kol
Kol, the servant of Hallgerd and killer of Svart, was killed when he fell off his horse after trying to defend himself against Atli, one of Bergthora’s servants, who was sent to kill him out of revenge for Svart. Njal, Bergthora’s husband, agreed to pay Gunnar 12 ounces of silver for his loss.
-Atli
Atli, servant of Bergthora and killer of Kol, died tragically in Thorofsfell. Brynjolf the Brawler had been sent my Hallgerd to kill him. He was first hit in the head with an axe, but he was able to fight back for some time before he finally succumbed to his wounds. Gunnar agreed to pay Njal 100 ounces of silver for the loss because Atli had recently been made a freeman.
-Brynjolf the Brawler
Brynjolf was found dead by one of Hallgerd’s shepherds on a beaten path. Thord Freed-man’s son apparently killed him. He was killed by a blow to his chest with an axe. Njal paid Gunnar 100 ounces of silver as recompense.
